Abstract
The aim of the article, based on the analysis of the food shortage and the increase in the cost of living, which date back from 1942, is to understand how these affected the life of workers and, at the same time, how porto-alegrenses workers in 1945 started a strike movement. Both processes form part of the constitution of the working class and take place in the context of the Second World War and the Estado Novo.
