Abstract

This text analyzes the importance of food as a defining element of identity in discourses of the new European radical-right, in the first decade of the 21st century. The research was centered on the study of soup distribution events, organized in France in 2006 by radical-right groups. The soup was called “identity soup”, among other names, and had pork as an ingredient. Those actions, according to the groups, were aimed at helping “exclusively french” citizens who were starving in that country. The action of distributing “identity soups” was used by other radical right groups in countries like England, Belgium and Portugal. The case of “identity soups” illustrates how the speeches of the radical right can approximate food to an alleged “defense of national identities” in the face of the “threat of invasion” of a foreign culture.
