Abstract

This article considers that the main identity marker within the Jewish community in Rio de Janeiro is directly related to political choices, which split the group between progressive Jews and conservatives. While this choice determines the entire sociability network of individual Jews, and has deep implications for Brazilian Jews today, our focus is the origin of this identity marker in the 1930s and 1940s.
