Abstract
This article analyzes the representations of black people in the newspapers of São João del-Rei, focusing on their religious and racial elements. We intend to indicate that, in the elite's conception of the city, the black appeared as an inferior element, either due to its associations with the devil and evil; whether by the images of barbarian, violent, uncivilized and racially incapable, widely disseminated by the periodic press.
