Abstract

In the Old Regime, justice was considered the king's main activity, being confused with administration and maintenance of social and political order. However, the discretion of real power was limited by informal powers and regulations linked to local law. In this article, we analyze the conflicts of jurisdiction of the municipal offices that defined justice in the Portuguese empire, especially in its overseas designs.
