Abstract

The patterns of preaching and the model of preacher defined by António Vieira bond him to purposes of defending the Catholic faith and extending the frontiers of Christianity. At the same time, the images and speeches he enunciated have to be placed within the context of the affirmation of the messianic project of the Fifth Empire, with which the affirmation of the independence and prominence of the Portuguese State was sought.
