Abstract

José Sarney’s political career is one of the main reasons for his weakness when he assumed the presidency. Housed in the historic moment of the decline of the military regime, the president elect in the opposition plate reaped the hostility of the streets and the indifference of the political establishmet. Knowing he could not count on the support of the political class nor the Brazilian society, Sarney tried to make the Cruzado Plan, first, and external debt negotiation, a year later, its main political banners. Although he has achieved occasional peaks of popularity, Sarney joined the contemporary history of Brazil as one of the most delegitimized presidents to complete the mandate.
