Abstract

The Middle Ages was violent. Here is a commonplace. However, the interpretation about this omnipresence of violence has been rewritten in recent decades. Designed in the light of this change, this article consists of a study about the relationship between the episcopal power and the use of physical force in the Regnum Italicum during the 9th and the 11th centuries. Cartularies, cronicles and diploms were analyzed to conceptualize the social meaning of violence and war.
