Abstract

The paper intends to characterize the credit market in Juiz de Fora in the second half of the nineteenth century through the judicial execution proceedings debts analysis. Credit here will be treated as an act of lending money – or buy goods – with time limit and interest stipulated to pay off debt, involving the Juiz de Fora and nearby towns inhabitants in financial transaction. In the absence of an efficient banking system, these men and women were who will work to fulfill the demand for credit at that time.
