Abstract
The article intends to analyze the Rio de Janeiro in the geopolitical context of the 18th Century, as center which managed the key issues of the Portuguese Empire in the America, that captaincy worked as basis to those achievements. Thus, we have the intention to present the growing of the Rio importance during this period, and the social changes that emerged in this new scenario.
