Abstract
The purpose of this article is to point out the main factors which conditioned the trajectory of public employment in the U.S. since the proclamation of Independence until recent times, with emphasis on the period beginning with the New Deal. The data indicate that in the post-W WII, the level of public employment has grown significantly and its profile has changed as the ideological hegemony of the 50s and 60s (Keynesianism) is replaced by neoliberalism.
