Abstract

The question of “Who Are We?” was raised in the nineteenth century, with the consolidation of the national state in Brazil and it has remained our most urgent question becoming since that time a genuine obsession for Brazilian intellectuals. Indeed, from this quest to “be national,” all the political ideas and models put forth by Brazilian intellectuals since the nineteenth century have emerged. This text examines how the works of Sergio Buarge de Holanda fit into this perspective, reformulating it.
