Abstract

In the present article I try to analyze, in the writings of Euclides da Cunha, the change in the author's perspective about the monarchist-conspiratory character of the Canudos movement based on his reading of Victor Hugo's Quatre-vingt-treize, as well on his trip to the Bahia hinterland as a correspondent for the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo. In order to accomplish this, I use sources such as articles written for the above mentioned newspaper, his expedition journal, personal letters and the book Os Sertões.
