Abstract
Colonial villages and cities appear in Brazil in the presence of vast and lush nature. They are fortified places, port and fort gazing at an immense wilderness that was gradually conquered. The proposal of this article is to analyse the purposes of the design of 16th and 17th century villages and cities located on the north-eastem, discussing the formation of a mentality concerning the new territory.
