Humberto Mauro's History in Cinema: an analysis of the film "The Discovery of Brazil" - 1937.

Abstract

This article intends to analyse the relation between cinema and history in Brazil using the filme - O Descobrimento do Brasil (The Discovery of Brazil) directed by Humberto Mauro in 1937. The Scren play of this film was based on the "Letter of Pero Vaz de Caminha" to the King Dom Manuel of Portugal, in wich he describes the physical and human caractheristics of the new land. The film is therefore a perspective analisys of the first Brazilian official document. This article also intends to analyse in na analogue way the elements of Caminha's letter which were included by the director in the film and how these elements are related with the construction of historical image of Brazil at the period the film was made.
