Abstract

The French travelers who came to Brazil in the 16th and 17th centuries left written records in which it is possible to detect important continuities from medieval thought. An analysis of André Thevet's, Jean de Léry's and Claude d'Abbeville's texts illustrate the continuity of an imagination which cannot be classified as modern.
