Trends in Agro-Export Production in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais: 1870/1930

Abstract

In the period under analysis, the Zona da Mata was the principal region of coffee production in the state. Its increasing output withstood the impact of Abolition and the overproduction crisis of the early twentieth century. Conditions were relatively favorable thanks to the availability of land in comparison with the coffee zone of Rio de Janeiro, the region with which the Mata is consistently identified in the historiography on this subject.
