Abstract

The Catholic Church was central to the ideological and societal project of the Salazarist New State. The aim of this article is to chart the evolution of the relations between the Catholic Church and the New State under Salazar (1933-1968) in the light of both Portuguese domestic politics and the internal dynamics of the Church, in a period of profound upheaval (rise of authoritarianism, World War II, Cold War, Colonial War,
aggiornamento).
