Abstract

This text intends to analyze the representations of the female sex prepared by the Portuguese Oratorian priest, Manuel Bernardes. Two books were selected for this study: Armas de castidade (1699) [Weapons of chastity] and Nova Floresta [New Forest] (1706-1728). In these devotional works, it is possible to identify studies that were considered honorable for the female sex. In addition, we intend to discuss the construction of misogynistic images, collected and reworked by Bernardes.
