Abstract
This paper refers to the History of the province of Santa Cruz, which we commonly call Brazil, a text published in Lisbon in 1576, by the humanist scholar Pero de Magalhães Gândavo. The study reveals some aspects still little noticed by scholars of the History: first, its rhetorical dimension, as genus deliberativum, and second, its relationship with another text published by the Portuguese scholar, the orthographic treatise Rules that teach writing method and an orthography of the Portuguese language (1572).
