Brothers in art: work, identity and the press in nineteencentury São Paulo

Abstract

This article analyzes how the discourse of a nineteenth-century newspaper, published by a group of typographers in São Paulo, articulated a language in order to create a worker identity. It intends to show that the social meanings of the “class” concept operated within that discourse made it fail to achieve its goal.
