Giant sialolith of the submandibular gland: case report

Introduction: Sialolithiasis is a benign condition characterized by the formation of stones in the ductal system or in the parenchyma of the salivary glands. When these stones reach diameters greater than 15 mm, they are called giant sialoliths. In these dimensions, they can obstruct salivary flow and/or predispose to the occurrence of inflammatory and infectious processes. Objective: To report a case of giant sialolith in the submandibular gland and highlight the importance of imaging tests in the choice of treatment. Case report: Male patient, 72 years old, asymptomatic, diagnosed with giant sialolith in the submandibular gland, measuring 16 x 0.9 x 13 mm, removed by intraoral access, without complications and/or postoperative complications. Conclusion: Computed tomography is an excellent imaging test for locating and measuring the extent of sialolith, which is essential for scaling surgical techniques.
