Abstract

Introduction: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a major cause of chronic respiratory morbidity in very low birth weight preterm newborns. As neonatal survival increases, it becomes essential to understand the clinical and epidemiological factors associated with BPD in neonatal intensive care units. Objective: To determine the clinical and epidemiological profile of very low birth weight newborns diagnosed with bronchopulmonary dysplasia in a neonatal ICU in the Zona da Mata region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 2023. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study with 49 very low birth weight preterm infants admitted in 2023. Variables included gestational age, birth weight, Apgar score, delivery type, surfactant use, presence of sepsis, and respiratory support duration. Statistical analyses included Chi-square, Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney test, and logistic regression. Results: The incidence of BPD was 47%. Significant associations were found between BPD and lower gestational age, birth weight <1000g, low Apgar scores, early and late sepsis, and longer durations of oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilation. Severe BPD cases showed greater exposure to invasive respiratory support and a higher rate of neonatal infections. Conclusion: BPD is strongly associated with extreme prematurity, low birth weight, and neonatal infectious complications. Findings underscore the need for individualized care strategies and preventive approaches in neonatal units.
