Abstract

Respiratory tract infections represent one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. Among the clinical presentations of viral infections, we have the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which is a flu-like illness with signs of severity, representing a notifiable condition. The objective of the study is to evaluate the occurrence of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in the population of Juiz de Fora, MG, during a period of 5 years. The data analyzed were provided by the municipality's epidemiological surveillance. Clinical/epidemiological data from the notification forms between the years 2016 and 2021 were collected. A total of 20,817 patients were analyzed. The mean age between 2016 and 2019 was 24.36 years (SD± 25.7) and between 2020 and 2021 the mean was 52.17 years (SD± 24.4). Between 2016-2019, the involvement by age group was concentrated among Infants (0-2 years) 25.41% of cases, Children (3-12 years) 22.31% and Young Adults (18-39 years) 23 .45% of cases. Between 2019 and 2021 there was a change in this profile with a higher occurrence of cases concentrated among middle-aged and elderly adults. Regarding the etiology, the Influenza virus was responsible for 6.11% of the cases, 19.4% were caused by other respiratory viruses and SARS-CoV-2 in 2 years was responsible for 72.59% of the cases. Between 2019-2021, 99.41% of cases required hospitalization, with 48.01% of patients going to the ICU. Patients with Risk Factors had an Odds Ratio of 3.7 to evolve to death. COVID-19 impacted SARS, causing a change in involvement, increasing the mean age and the presence of risk factors. Other respiratory viruses besides Influenza can be the etiology of severe cases. Juiz de Fora promotes hospitalization in almost 100% of cases in the ward. In addition, about 50% of cases require ICU care.
