Abstract

Introduction: In a context of increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome (SM), non-pharmacological interventions, such as lifestyle changes, are recommended for prevention and treatment. New alternatives for this purpose are natural products, which can protect the body against oxidative stress and improve metabolic parameters. Objective: To evaluate the results of clinical studies in patients with SM from supplementation with natural products. Material and Methods: Search for articles published from 2015 to 2020 in Portuguese and English was carried out, using the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Public Medline (PubMed), Web of Science, Scopus, Embase and Virtual Health Library databases. The terms used for the research were: metabolic syndrome; oxidative stress; natural products. Results: Of the 47 randomized clinical trials found, eight were included. Most studies revealed a beneficial association between the consumption of natural products and the control of parameters related to SM. In six of the eight articles, the intake of natural products had a positive effect on the lipid profile; and in three studies the beneficial effects on waist circumference were verified. In addition, in six of the eight clinical trials, natural products decreased some marker of oxidative stress. Conclusion: This review, therefore, provides data suggesting that supplementation of natural products to the diet is a factor in the control and prevention of SM. However, larger, more homogeneous studies with a greater number of evaluated parameters are necessary to build robust evidence on the effects of these products on patients with this syndrome.
