Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder of multiple etiologies, characterized by chronic hyperglycemia due to defects in insulin secretion and / or action and reduced glucose uptake in peripheral tissues, resulting in insulin resistance. Thus, this article addresses pathophysiological aspects of type 2 diabetes mellitus, aiming to elucidate insulin signaling pathways in skeletal muscle tissue and how the uptake of glucose may be impaired in an insulin resistant individual, pointing to the practice of physical exercise as a non-pharmacological resource and / or adjacent therapy for the improvement of insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake in skeletal muscle tissue. Therefore, a research was carried out to review the literature on already published materials about the subject and a qualitative analysis. Activation-mediated AMP-activated protein kinase signaling may optimize glucose uptake in the insulin-independent muscle.Downloads
