Abstract

Introduction: Religiosity and spirituality (RE) raise debates in nursing since Florence Nightingale to the present day with evidence-based clinical practice. In the last decades, there has been a considerable increase quantity and quality of evidence of the association of RE in health and quality of life outcomes. However, there is still little evidence of the use of RE in clinical nursing practice. Objectives: To review studies that used the RE in clinical nursing practice and propose a protocol for the applicability RE in clinical nursing practice. Methods: A literature review of scientific articles published in English, Portuguese or Spanish in the last 10 years was performed in the electronic databases SciELO, LILACS, BDENF and PubMed / Medline. PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) statement was used to organize the relevant articles. Results: Nine articles were considered eligible for analysis. Most studies were performed in the United States of America (n = 5/9). We identified 4/9 articles published in the last four years, the predominant areas were oncology nursing (n = 4/9) and generalist nursing (n = 4/9). There was a great diversity of designs used as practical recommendations for the use of RE in clinical nursing practice (n = 2/9), expert comments and practical recommendations (2/9), application of pilot study and proposal of improvement in the quality of religious and spiritual care performed by nurses (n = 2/9), qualitative study (n = 2/9) and only a quasi-experimental study. Conclusion: After a broad literature review, we identified few studies on the applicability of RE in clinical nursing practice. The studies analyzed have some limitations or low level of evidence-based nursing practice. After these findings, we developed recommendations and protocol for the use of RE in clinical nursing practice based on updated and specialized literature.
