Enhance men`s compliance to health care orientation and expand actions to overcome the biomedical model are some of the challenges in primary health care. The purpose of this observational, quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was to discuss the self- perception of the quality of life of male users of a family health unit, located in Manguinhos, RJ, Brazil. The Portuguese abbreviated version of Quality of Life Assessment Instrument (WHOQOL-bref) was used. The sample consisted of 133 men residents in the area, aged 20-59 years. The participants reported a good general quality of life; the physical domain being the best evaluated, followed by the psychological one. The domain with the worst evaluation was the environmental, mainly in relation to the facet that measures having sufficient financial and have leisure opportunities. Individuals with higher income and education level reported a better perception of quality of life. Studies on the male population should be conducted for a better understanding of the barriers existing in health services, as well as define specific strategies. Among the collective actions, men`s health groups must be implemented in addition to the provision of care for acute demands, providing opportunities to promote and prevent.
