Abstract

Schistosomiasis, an infestation by S. mansoni is endemic in many countries and is becoming more widespread due to migratory processes.  It may also become established in any site with the right environmental and epidemiological conditions. The condition has important public health implications and due to this we have carried out a survey of the knowledge about this parasitosis amongst the population of the villages of Vaquejada e Pasagen do Engenho, both in the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />municipality of Cristopolis, BA. The main objectives of this study were to assess the socio-economic and sanitary circumstances of this population as well the level of knowledge about the condition including awareness about it transmission, preventative measures and treatment.  A multiple choice questionnaire was applied in each dwelling covering all these aspects.  These results suggest that the lack of knowledge is one of the main factors perpetuating the condition in these settings. A public campaign to increase awareness about the condition as well as further epidemiological surveillance is need in the region if the situation is to be ameliorated. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
