Quality of maternal and child health care in different models of Primary Health Care

This study aimed to evaluate the quality of the prenatal health care in two different models of Primary Health Care. Interviews were carried out by trained personnel with a random sample of mothers in maternities. Indicators of prenatal assistance were evaluated for Family Health Strategy Teams and traditional Health Centers during 10 months. Among 379 interviews, 159 were referring to the exclusive assistance at Family Health Strategy (42%) and 220 were referring to the exclusive assistance at traditional Health Centers (58%). Both groups showed similar sociodemographic characteristics. For prenatal health care the results showed no statistical significant differences between the two models except for the numbers of consultations. Women followed by the Family Health Strategy Teams had more chance of receive six or more consultations (p<0.006). Also in relation to the pregnancy outcomes, no statistical differences had been observed, but both the services had presented elevated proportions of premature delivers and low birth weight.
