Section Policies

Peer Review Process

The review and evaluation process of the manuscript's scientific content will only be initiated after meeting all requirements criteria described in the Instructions for authors. Manuscripts that do not meet these requirements will be returned to the corresponding author for adaptations.Contributions that comply with the Instructions to Authors will be forwarded to the editors, who will assign two reviewers who are specialists on the theme addressed. Peer-reviewing is an entirely anonymous process. Once appraised, the manuscripts will be forwarded to the editors, who will consider publishing them based on the reviewers’ assessment and remarks. Manuscripts rejected, but which can be improved by reworking, may be changed and resubmitted as new submissions, being subject to the normal reviewing process. Those accepted on the condition that the reviewers’ remarks be addressed will be reassessed by the same reviewers. Manuscripts sent to the authors for revision must be returned to the editors within 30 days, otherwise the submission process will be terminated.

An editor (editors, associate editors etc.) should provide impartial consideration to all manuscripts offered for publication, judging each on its particular feature without regard to race, religion, nationality, sex, seniority, or institutional affiliation of the author(s). An editor should review and treat a manuscript submitted for publication with all reasonable speed. An editor takes sole responsibility for accepting or rejecting a manuscript for publication. An editor may seek assistance on a manuscript from specialists chosen for their expertise and fair judgment. An editor should not reveal any information about the manuscript under consideration to anyone other than the author and designated reviewers until after the evaluation process is complete. An editor should respect the intellectual independence of authors.

QUARKS considers an AUTHOR he who was responsible for a part of the work at least. AUTHORS should be able to explain in deep the problem in study. For QUARKS, all authors are RESPONSIBLE for the content they submitted. The CORRESPONDING AUTHOR is responsible for the agreement of all the AUTHORS and to keep them informed about the submission process since first submission of their manuscript. He is responsible for providing the license to publish, in case of acceptance, on behalf of all the AUTHORS. QUARKS assumes that submitting the paper implies in total agreement from ALL the AUTHORS. For manuscripts with more than 10 authors, all the authors should provide a declaration specifying what was their contribution to the manuscript.
It is not acceptable for QUARKS to consider for publication anything that was PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED, neither entirely nor in parts in other Journals. Anything sent to QUARKS must not be under analysis anywhere else. Simultaneous submissions to QUARKS and any other journal, is considered a major conduct flaw, and ALL the AUTHORS will be definitively banned, and all their previous publications in ORBITAL will be publicly retracted. Plagiarism and self-plagiarism will be treated the same way. Multiple manuscripts, dealing with closely related subjects and/or variables are discouraged as long as they could figure in a single paper.

QUARKS invites peers to review its submissions, relying on their expertise, curricula and their will to review them as volunteers. By accepting to REVIEW a manuscript, the REVIEWER commits himself to do so in due time. Delays are extremely negative to the review process and makes it last much more than it should. When a REVIEWER is requested, he is gently asked TO ANSWER THE INVITATION E-MAIL, informing if he is or not willing to review the manuscript. It is a gesture of politeness and it avoids delays too. By accepting to review a manuscript, the REVIEWER declares that no conflicts of interests exist, and he is doing his revision for the wealth and progress of Science. Those reviewers who answer our requests, agreeing or not, and those who respect the deadlines, are scored positively, and eventual submissions they could send to QUARKS will be treated with priority.

Publication Frequency

QUARKS: Brazilian Electronic Journal of Physics, Chemistry and Materials Science is a quarterly scientific journal published by the Universidade Federal de Juiz de For a- Minas Gerais, Brazil. Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

This journal will use the LOCKSS system to create an archiving system distributed among the participating libraries. This archiving system will allow you to create permanent journal files for preservation and restoration.

The first issue of this journal was published in September 2019. This is the result of large efforts of many professors from various fields, both from UFJF and from other universities. To get to this point, a lot of work has been done and it is important to mention the support of librarian Adriana Oliveira and teacher Priscila Faria Pinto, who tirelessly sought information about the OJS system. Another important support received from Rectors Mônica Oliveira and Luís Paulo S. Barra, who opened spaces for discussions and forums between the editors of other magazines until the creation of the Portal. Also very important was the trust in our work by the colleagues who submitted their articles. We intend to edit a special publication with the works presented during the UFJF Physics postgraduate Workshop and other events that are of interest for publication in QUARKS. We believe that the magazine will gradually gain the credibility of the authors and the readers' interest, as we can say that it has already started to present works of excellent quality.

If online submission is not feasible, the materials can be sent by e-mail to the editors.

All manuscripts should be written in English. Submitted manuscript, after preliminary review by one of the Editors, will be reviewed by at least two referees.
The corresponding author should send a cover letter with the submission stating title, type of paper (full paper, short communication or review), total word count (including references, tables and figure legends), warrants that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, suggestion up to five names of possible reviewers to the manuscript. Submission of a manuscript implies that its publication has been approved by all co-authors.

Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.

Manuscripts should fall under one the following categories:

Full papers report the results of original investigations and should be structured in the usual order of presentation, comprising Introduction, Results and Discussion, Experimental section (which may either precede or follow Results and Discussion), Conclusions, Acknowledgments, and References, according to the specificities of each manuscript.

This category encompasses reflective articles and analyses of the literature output, outlining the progress and state-of-the-art in particular areas of Chemistry, from the specialist’s perspective.

The focus of papers on Education is the teaching with dissemination of innovative experiences at all levels of schooling, from elementary to higher education (undergraduate and graduate programs). Short communications of accounts of academic or professional experience, also fall into this category.

Shorter texts (of up to four pages) on scientific investigations under way, reporting preliminary results achieved to date. Their purpose is to speed up communication regarding ongoing lines of investigation that have led to recent breakthroughs.

Technical notes are reports on methods, techniques, equipment, or accessories developed at the authors’ laboratory.

These should encourage constructive discussion between readers and authors and may concern any scientific topic relevant to the purposes of the journal, including critical discussion of recently published papers; in this case, Letters submitted by readers will be forwarded to the authors in question inviting responses to the readers’ appraisal or critique. Letters to the Editor will be published at the sole discretion of the Editorial Team and only after a response from the authors has been obtained.
