Abstract

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Pain has a number of pathophysiological mechanisms and underlying meanings and can vary greatly in terms of its intensity, quality and duration. According to the ICD-11, pain is defined as chronic when it is persistent or recurrent and lasts longer than three months.  The prevalence of chronic pain is estimated to be high, affecting almost a third of the world's population. In addition, the literature shows that chronic pain, regardless of its type, is an important risk factor for suicide.  Psychological on-call services aim to help people with their urgencies and emergencies, and can be set up in a variety of contexts. However, scientific studies on psychological on-call, especially in the hospital context, are scarce. Objectives: The general aim of this study is to report on the experience of implementing psychological on-call at the HU-UFJF chronic pain clinic and to discuss the potential and limits of psychological on-call as a form of psychological intervention in this context. Report: The present work consisted of a descriptive, qualitative study, and aimed to present the experience of implementing psychological on-call at the multiprofessional chronic pain outpatient clinic at HU-UFJF, in the city of Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, between the months of July 2021 and February 2022, during the SARS-CoV-19 pandemic. Conclusion: Psychological on-call has proved to be an important training space for the resident psychologist, as well as an important space for psychological care for subjects with chronic pain in their crises and subjective urgencies.
