The article takes up the themes of the book "Crisis and Critique", developing arguments about the relationship between "crises" and the fragility of the foundations of social life, which becomes more evident in moments of crisis, either because of the ruptures with what seemed routine and normal that emerge from this, or because of the possibilities of problematization that make society an object of reflection for itself. The concept of crisis can then be critically recovered not to produce a general theory, but to study the plurality of ways in which societies give visibility to (or hide) their conflicts, excesses and structural problems, even when the crisis seems normalized. Finally, the article also deals with the challenges of critique in reading these processes and the possibility of exploring alternatives.

The central aim of this article is to analyze Rodrigo Cordero's text entitled Crisis and Critique. The question that will be investigated is mainly how the author approaches the notions of crisis and criticism, as concepts that are not only relevant, but also interrelated. At the same time, we will look at how philosophical thought (mostly theoretical and critical) has the same relationship of intrinsic connection with other humanities knowledge, more specifically sociology.

The book Critique and Crisis: on the fragile foundations of social life published by Ateliê de Humanidades Editorial (Rio: 2022) by Rodrigo Cordero invites us to rethink the ontological foundations of critique at a time when the crisis of power devices seems to be perpetuating itself to produce what C. Castoriadis (1992) summarized very pertinently 30 years ago in "The fragmented world". My approach to the problem intentionally departs from the Eurocentric perspective that prioritizes the theoretical and philosophical truths of the so-called "classics". Instead, I believe it is necessary to value the epistemological justice through which a plurality of perspectives can be recognized, such as those on the frontiers of knowledge, which allow us to problematize the current world system more objectively as the result of various movements that Dussel (1993) calls transmodernity. As we will see below, the challenge of rethinking the critique of the crisis or the crisis of critique in the current context cannot be answered from the epistemic and moral categories inherited from the Eurocentric program. This has precise historical limits given by the imperial, warlike and racist imaginary that markedly impregnates the representations of Western modernity, separating what the colonizers call superior and inferior cultures and ethnicities. So the critique formulated from the borders aims to break with this imperial and colonial imaginary founded on a strong hierarchy of domination that historically discriminates against peoples and individuals according to a racist and patriarchal scale of valuation.

This text was written as a reaction to the chapter "The fragile world in the in-between: totalitarian destruction and the modesty of critical thinking - Hannah Arendt" (chapter 5) in Rodrigo Cordeiro's book, "Crisis and Criticism". I therefore reflect on the modest role of the intellectual in the face of the world and its crises, based on Cordeiro's reading of the German philosopher. I try to present indications of Arendt's perception of public intellectuals, not only in her criticism of "professionals", but also based on the qualities she identified, for example, in the behavior of Socrates and Karl Jaspers. The intellectual then appears as a flâneur who is able to step away from the incessant rhythm of life, observe the flow and then stop to think. Subsequently, the intellectual's modest role is understood as that of "guardian" and guarantor of the existence of the necessary space between men in which humanity, and the public world itself, can express itself - the in-between.

Critique, crisis and reconstruction in Habermas

The article presents a reading of the relationship between critique and crisis in the work of Jürgen Habermas in dialog with the interpretation offered by Cordero (2022). It seeks to establish the relationship between criticism and the project of a "reconstructive" theory as a strategy for understanding social learning processes, based on moments of crisis and the need to solve problems. Critique takes on a more active role here, associated with the more creative functions of the language of world discolsure, understood as complementary to the cognition of systemic problems. At the same time, it is argued that Habermas' emphasis on issues of rationality does not exclude other forms of intervention, but can be compared to the defense of a "space of reasons", in which theoretical knowledge is desirable in its specificity and in which intellectuals occupy a place as participants.
